A  Beginner’s Guide To Paleo Diet

The Paleo diet is based on the diet of our ancestors. The word paleo refers to the palaeolithic period. It is that prehistoric period of human development when agriculture was not yet discovered. Therefore, humans during those times used to eat only those foods that were readily available in the environment. Over the period of human civilization, there have been massive changes in the food habits of human beings. However, what hasn’t changed yet is our ability to adapt to these new foods. The lack of adaptation is considered to be responsible for the existence of modern diseases today such as diabetes, obesity and heart diseases.

Paleo diet includes natural foods such as grass-fed proteins, seafood, eggs, nuts, plant-based vegetables, fruits, etc. The paleo diet consists of foods which are high in fibre, potassium, high omega-3 fatty acids and low sodium. The paleo diet also restricts food groups that were not consumed by our ancestors because they were not readily available. These food groups include foods such as grain, legumes, refined sugars, dairy and salt. These foods are ingredients for most of the unhealthy foods in the world. Paleo diet is particularly beneficial for people who want to lose weight.

The modern Paleo diet tries to mimic this diet. The general idea here is that to be the healthiest, you need to eat what your ancestors ate. The diet lets you eat organically produce raised meat. But you won’t be able to eat dairy, grain or processed foods. If you depend on the typical western diet, this kind of diet might seem very challenging. Most people rely on processed food for their calorie intake. This makes it all the more difficult to cope up with the paleo diet. However, once you get started with the diet and get used to it, it’s actually easy to follow.

Basically, with the paleo diet, you will be eating foods like:

  • Vegetables and fruits
  • Fresh and dried herbs
  • Poultry, beef, lamb and seafood
  • Eggs
  • Nuts, seeds and healthy oils

The paleo diet also restricts foods like these:

  • Grains (wheat, oats, corn, rice)
  • Legumes (beans, peanuts, etc)
  • Dairy
  • Refined sugar
  • Potatoes
  • Alcohol or anything processed

These foods might be the ones that cause weight gain. Our ancestors didn’t have access to these kinds of foods and so shouldn’t you if you strictly want to follow the paleo diet.
